Patient Care Projects and Community Outreach

Patient care projects are one of the most important aspects of who we are as a chapter.  Our student body plays an active role in reaching out to our community.  We currently have sixteen active committees that organize and coordinate events around Memphis and Knoxville as well as around the state of Tennessee.

Aside from the national patient care projects Operation Immunization, Operation Diabetes, and the Heartburn Awareness Challenge, we also have a number of other committees to serve the patients of Tennessee, including Hypertension, Medication Education, Men’s and Women’s Health, Asthma, Poison Prevention, and Pediatrics. Our committees focus on these specific patient populations to screen, educate, and promote healthy lifestyles, and demonstrate pharmacists’ commitment to patient care.

We usually hold events at area churches, grocery stores, pharmacies, and community centers where we offer our services free of charge. Some of our many activities include:

    • Blood-glucose screenings
    • Hypertension screenings
    • Patient-education events: asthma, diabetes, family health
    • Brown bags (educating patients about their current medication regimen)
    • Guest speakers (career opportunities, residencies, legislative affairs)
    • Disaster relief projects
    • American Diabetes Association Walk for Diabetes
    • “Wear Red” Day to promote heart disease awareness in women
    • Immunizations (over 9,500 were administered last year!)
    • Boo Flu: give shots to your favorite (or least favorite) faculty members
    • IPSF international dinners
    • Great American Smokeout
    • World AIDS Day
    • Celebrate Everybody 5K Race
